Chapter 30

“Sirra’Kan, are you not?”

“I am,” Kor’Tanna answered.

“This is a Sirra’Kan vessel, if I am not mistaken,” the Veetanho said. “How is it a Human is in command?”

“He was aboard the vessel before it made landfall,” she said with a frown, and quietly continued, “I was already here. When this ship returns to Sirra’Kan space, command might very well change.”

I was still in the hallway, but Tanna had her comm open so I could hear what was said.

“It must be very hard taking orders from a Human,” he said.

“You have no idea,” she answered. “He makes everyone call him, ‘Boss.’ It is not easy for one of my race to do such a thing.”

“Can you tell me what he is doing on Karma?”

“He was searching for the engineer who built his first prosthetic arm. Unfortunately, he failed—the engineer was gone. If not for my father, I would not be stuck in a business venture with such as him.”

“Regrettable. Do you know who this engineer is?”

“I am not sure,” she answered. “The Human has not told us. Now I am stuck with a one-armed Human; can you imagine anything more useless?”

“I cannot imagine anything,” he said. “Your cooperation is appreciated.”

The Veetanho rejoined me in the corridor. “I think we have seen enough of the crew. Everything seems in order.”

I felt a tickle in my implant. It took every bit of my willpower not to shoot the Veetanho on the spot, but his probe failed to penetrate the defenses placed inside by Kreela.

“Perhaps you can give me those contacts you spoke of,” I said.

“That, I can do.”

I handed him a slate, and could see the disappointment as he entered several addresses; he had expected me to lower my implant’s defenses to relay the information.

We rejoined the others in the cargo bay, where the crates were being cinched down again.

“Nothing here, sir,” one of the Zuul stated.

“Have a safe journey,” the Veetanho said to me as he joined his companions.

“You too,” I said as they walked down the ramp.

“I feel I must bathe,” Tanna said from behind me. “That Veetanho is a trreebathis.”

“Trrebathis?”

“A small and scaly creature that is poisonous.”

“I guess everyone has their snakes. He’s lucky Kreela is as smart as he is. He tried to hack my implant; if he’d succeeded, I would have put a bullet through his.”

“We have received our departure time,” the pilot said over my comm. “We can take off in twenty minutes.”

“Let’s get belted in and ready for takeoff, then,” I said. “How did it go out here?”

“Braelok did well, Boss,” Kal grinned. “He bitched the whole time about moving crates. It’s beneath him since he’s such a fierce warrior, you know.”

I laughed.

“They took three or four crates from the top, looked in them, then stacked them back up. The rest of the time they bullshitted about the good old days—the days before Humans were gimping up the galaxy’s shit.”

“‘Gimpin’ up their shit?’ That’s a new one.”

He shrugged.

“Soon as we hit hyper, we’ll pull the crates and you guys can meet the new armorer of Quin’Tanna.
